India’s Rohan Bopanna added another record to his name during his opening-round victory in men’s doubles at the Monte Carlo Masters on Sunday.

Pairing up with American Ben Shelton, Bopanna beat the Argentine-Chilean duo of Francisco Cerundolo and Alejandro Tabilo 6-3, 7-5 in an hour and nine minutes. In the process, Bopanna became the oldest man to win a match in either singles or doubles at the ATP Masters 1000 level at the age of 45 years and one month.

ATP confirmed the record on its social media accounts on Monday night along with a message from the Indian. However, the global body for men’s professional tennis did not mention whose record was broken by Bopanna. In singles, the oldest player to win a match at the ATP Masters 1000 level is Croatia’s Ivo Karlovic, who beat India’s Prajnesh Gunneswaran at the age of 40 in Indian Wells in 2019.

Last year, Bopanna became the oldest man to win a Grand Slam in the Open era when he and Matthew Ebden clinched the Australian Open title. The run also helped Bopanna to become the oldest first-time World No. 1 in doubles. In March 2024, Bopanna (paired up with Ebden) became the oldest ATP Masters 1000 champion at the Miami Open.

Bopanna and Shelton face the third-seeded Italian pair of Simone Bolelli and Andrea Vavassori in the round of 16 on Tuesday.
