Kate Tomas, Andrew Garfield’s girlfriend, claps back at ‘misogynistic’ reactions to their relationship

Andrew Garfield‘s partner Kate Tomas has spoken out about the “misogyny” attached to dating a famous man.

In a new interview with The Sunday Times, Kate went in on the “misogynistic nature” of the interest in her as a woman dating a Hollywood actor – calling out the paparazzi in particular. Her relationship with Andrew was outed by paparazzi in March when they stepped out on a double date with Phoebe Bridgers and comedian Bo Burnham.

“They [the paparazzi] will take maybe 150 pictures, then they choose the four where you look worst,” Kate said, adding that a depressing part of it is the “misogynistic nature of that interest — criticism of how a woman looks, of what [she] does for work.”

In true icon fashion, Kate made no secret of the “frustrating” nature of being viewed primarily in her relationship with a man. “No matter how accomplished or impactful a woman is, it’s always going to be more interesting if they are in a relationship with a man,” she said, adding: “I don’t want to sit under anybody’s shadow.”

Bizarrely, she was also asked whether she used witchcraft to attract someone like Andrew Garfield – as well having been awarded a doctorate, she works as a spiritual mentor and is a self-proclaimed professional witch.

Kate Tomas also spoke out on her podcast The Friday Emails last month about the cruel and abusive ways that people – including women – had reacted to news that she was dating the Spider-Man actor.

“F***ing hell, nothing could prepare me for having literally thousands of women telling me I’m ugly, I’m unattractive, I’m less than in every conceivable way,” she said.

Her candid approach to recounting the misogyny faced by women in the public eye proves one thing – that we could stand to do better when it comes to public takes on private celebrity relationships.
