Chris Evans Is Returning to the Marvel Cinematic Universe for ‘Avengers: Doomsday’

It looks like Kevin Feige is getting the gang back together for Avengers: Doomsday.

Marvel Studios rocked the multiverse last August when it surprised audiences at D23: The Ultimate Fan event by revealing that Robert Downey Jr. was returning to the fold for Avengers: Doomsday.

Now, less than four months later, it looks like another one of the franchise’s biggest stars is set to return.

Chris Evans Is Back!

According to reports, Chris Evans will join Downey in Avengers: Doomsday. However, it is unclear what role he will play at this time.

Evans, of course, portrayed Steve Rogers/Captain America for eight years, beginning with 2011’s Captain America: The First Avenger and culminating in the events of Avengers: Endgame. The last time we saw Rogers in the MCU, he had grown old after traveling back to the 1940s and passed the mantle of Captain America on to Anthony Mackie’s Sam Wilson.

While Wilson is clearly the MCU’s Captain America moving forward (he will make his big screen debut in next year’s Captain America: Brave New World, the multiversal nature of Avengers: Doomsday could allow for Evans to return as an alternate version of Cap.

Additionally, Evans has the obvious opportunity to follow in Downey’s footsteps and play a different character. After all, Evans recently managed to dust off his Johnny Storm for Deadpool & Wolverine.

Will Scarlet Johansson Make It a Full Avengers Reunion?

With both Evans and Downey now officially set to return for Avengers: Doomsday, Scarlett Johansson’s Natasha Romanoff/Black Widow is the only original Avenger not confirmed to appear in the film. While Johansson has long maintained that her time in Marvel is over, it would be surprising if the studio didn’t use this opportunity to assemble the original Avengers on screen again.
