‘Black Panther’ Star Connie Chiume Has Passed Away at 72
Actress and filmmaker Connie Chiume has passed away. She was 72.
Chiume was a star in South Africa for years, appearing in series including Inkom’ Edla Yodwa, Warriors from Hell, and Zone 14. She was introduced to wider audiences in 2018, however, when she appeared as Zawavari, the Mining Tribe Elder, in 2018’s Black Panther.

Chiume would later reprise her role in 2022’s Black Panther: Wakanda Forever.
Nongelo Chiume Pays Tribute to His Mother
Chiume’s son, Nongelo. told Newzroom Afrika that his mother had been admitted to the hospital for a “medical procedure” and had been “recovering well” when things took a turn for the worse.
“She left us a beautiful legacy, and the work that she’s done. Not only for her children or her family, but [also] for the community and the country at large,” her son said.

“[She] was one of the most notable icons coming from South Africa. And her work through activism on HIV and AIDS program[s], gender-based violence, on voter education in 1994. Those are all things we take as inspiration.”
Chiume Also Starred in ‘Black is King’
In addition to her work in South Africa and her time in the MCU, Chiume also starred in Beyonce’s 2020 musical Black is King and Netflix’s Seriously Single.
“The Chiume family would like to extend their heartfelt gratitude for all the messages of support and condolences during this difficult time, as they cope with the loss of their mother, Connie,” the family said in a statement (via Fox News).

“Her children would like to express their deep appreciation to the doctors and nursing staff who provided exceptional care during her stay.”
The family is making arrangements for a memorial and funeral service. Those details will be shared on Chiume’s social media platforms.
