Ariana Grande’s style has gone full ’60s

Ariana Grande has always been drawn to ‘60s mod-inspired silhouettes and styles, like teeny miniskirts with platform go-go boots, big hair, and graphic eyeliner, but her style has gone super ’60s as of late — as evidenced by her latest Instagram post, which looks like it could have come straight out of the mid-1960s — if iPhones existed back then, that is.
The singer shared a handful of pics promoting the launch of her beauty line r.e.m. beauty‘s Essential Drip Glossy Balm lip glosses and Hypernova Satin Matte Blushes. In the intro pic, she snaps a mirror selfie with her hair in its signature ponytail and her current favourite white reverse winged liner perfectly in place, a mauve gloss shining on her lips. The white liner definitely feels mod-inspired, but it’s the high-necked, sleeveless cream Tom Ford dress she’s wearing in the next pic that really takes the 60s cake.

The dress is a mock-neck mini with a wide belt slung low on Grande’s hips, sitting above the subtly ruffled skirt. She styled it with equally retro oversized sunglasses and her favourite French mani, plus some subtle stud earrings.

It makes sense that Ariana Grande would be throwing it back to the mod era with her look, given that r.e.m. beauty’s entire aesthetic is drawn from the retro-futuristic vibes of the mid-1960s, what with its sleek silver packaging with rounded corners. Two of Grande’s fragrances are even named after the era, Mod Blush and Mod Vanilla.
For the “Positions” music video in 2020, Grande already went full Jacqueline Kennedy in matching sets, and she loves wearing pieces from mod mainstay designer Courrèges.
Of course, we’ll also be seeing more Glinda-inspired looks as the November premiere of Wicked draws closer, a.k.a. anything and everything pink. We’ve already seen her channel her character at the Oscars, where she donned a billowing Giambattista Valli gown, and CinemaCon, where she looked like a flower in full bloom in Oscar de la Renta. Will we get a mod take on Glinda at some point during the press run? We hope so!
