‘Captain America: Brave New World’ Limps Past a Major Box Office Milestone

While all eyes were on Snow White this weekend, as the Disney live-action remake finally hit theaters, Captain America: Brave New World quietly reached a major milestone.

As of this writing, the latest Marvel blockbuster has crossed the $400 million mark at the global box office. Breaking down that total, Brave New World has made $192.1 million in domestic theaters and $208.7 million overseas.

According to Deadline, the film’s Top 5 international markets have been the United Kingdom ($22.5 million), Mexico ($16 million), China ($14.4 million), France ($14 million) and Korea ($11.4 million).

‘Captain America: Brave New World’ Runs Out of Steam

As the first Captain America film to star Antony Mackie’s Sam Wilson, Brave New World was not expected to reach the heights of Captain America: Civil War, which grossed $1.555 billion.

Additionally, ahead of the film’s release, there were numerous reports that Brave New World had not fared well with test audiences and had undergone numerous reshoots.

Despite the negative buzz surrounding the film, Captain America 4 made a strong debut, exceeding expectations and delivering a $100+ opening weekend.

Unfortunately for Marvel, the audiences who saw Brave New World over its opening weekend were not impressed. The film received middling critical reviews and a B- CinemaScore.

All Eyes on ‘Thunderbolts*’

After its strong opening weekend, Captain America quickly ran out of steam. It is now clear that the film will not even reach the low bar set by Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania ($476 million).

As Brave New World rides off into the sunset, all eyes will turn to Thunderbolts*, which will hit theaters in May. Unlike the last Captain America film, the buzz surrounding Thunderbolts* has largely been positive.

For Marvel, the film will be a significant bellwether of the MCU’s box office prospects. Outside of last year’s Deadpool & Wolverine, Marvel has struggled to reach its lofty standards in recent years.

The studio needs Thunderbolts* to fare well.
