Ryan Reynolds Wanted to Include an Infamous Disney Villain in an Early Version of ‘Deadpool 3’

Ahead of the release of Deadpool & Wolverine, many wondered how Ryan Reynold’s foul-mouthed hero would mesh with Disney’s family-friendly image.

While Disney fans worried that Deadpool would sully the company’s image, fans of the Merc with the Mouth were concerned that Disney would neuter the hero.

As it turned out, those fears were unfounded.

When Deadpool & Wolverine finally hit theaters, it was clear that Disney left Ryan Reynolds and his team alone to work their magic. Despite this hands-off approach, there were some lines that Disney would not cross.

Ryan Reynolds Wanted to Include an Infamous Character in ‘Deadpool 3’

During a recent talk with Andrew Garfield as part of Variety’s Actors on Actors series, Reynolds discussed his relationship with Disney. While the actor was adamant that he had a great time working in the Mouse House, Disney rejected one pitch.

Reynolds has made no secret that the third Deadpool installment went through numerous iterations before the team landed on Deadpool & Wolverine. As previously revealed, one of these ideas would have drawn inspiration from the 1950 film Rashomon, where a singular event is told from multiple perspectives.

Building on this idea, Reynolds pitched a film where Deadpool teamed up with the unseen hunter who shot Bambi’s mother in the classic Disney animated film.

“And then I pitched one where it’s a two-hander with me and the hunter who shot Bambi’s mom. Their answer was ‘We don’t touch Bambi, Ryan’,” he explained.

Disney Was Working on a Live-Action ‘Bambi’

While it is unlikely that Disney would ever want to evoke the infamous hunter who traumatized generations, Reynolds’s timing could not have been worse.

When Deadpool & Wolverine was in development, Disney was also working on a live-action Bambi film. While the later production has seemingly been canceled, it makes sense that Disney was extra protective of the IP.

So, there you have it. In some corner of the Marvel multiverse, we could have seen Deadpool and the hunter from Bambi teaming up. Can you imagine?
