Marvel Studios Spent $20 Million on a Mystery Animated Project

Following massive successes with What If…? and X-Men ’97, it looks like Marvel Studios is gearing up for another big animated project.

According to a new report from Forbes, Marvel spent $19.6 million on a mystery animated project last year. The information comes from financial filings in the UK, where Disney produces much of its products.

By choosing the UK, Disney and Marvel can get the government’s Audio-Visual Expenditure Credit, which gives the studio a cash reimbursement of up to 29.25% of the money that they spend in the country. In order to get the credit, however, studios must file publicly available financial statements.

According to the current Marvel financial statement, “the principal activity of the company is that of TV animation production.”

What Is the Marvel Mystery Project?

The most likely candidates for the Marvel mystery project would seemingly be Your Friendly Neighborhood Spider-Man, Marvel Zombies, and Eyes of Wakanda.

In their report, Forbes notes that the Marvel subsidiary named in the financial filings was 4Vibes Productions UK. The publication then questioned whether “Vibes” was short for “vibranium.”

Marvel’s Future in Animation

While it remains to be seen what the Marvel mystery project is, one thing is clear- Marvel has a bright future in animation.

After X-Men ’97 was universally lauded by critics and fans alike, the studio looks like it will soon expand its animation footprint in new and exciting ways.
